Strategy

No person chooses to be in foster youth, but young people who have experienced the foster care system are undoubtedly challenged with extra hurdles — they’re 20% more likely to become homeless and 50% more likely to drop out of high school than their non-foster youth peers. Pivotal exists to combat these statistics by providing current and former foster youth with educational and career supports that help provide the foundation for a flourishing future.

As the only agency in Silicon Valley offering a unique set of resources that blends coaching, workforce development, scholarships, and internships, our goal was to increase visibility to potential donors, partners and government officials. To inspire audiences, we elevated success stories of young people who defeated the odds, showcased the CEO’s role as a though leader in the space and spoke out about legislative changes and opportunities to educate community stakeholders about the ongoing needs of foster youth.

Results

We secured nearly 85 articles for Pivotal spanning a two-year partnership that reached more than 200M potential people. We placed local op eds in The Mercury News, earned the CEO recognition as a CBS Bay Area ‘Jefferson Award’ recipient and earned television features like KTVU’s “Giving Day” segment. We secured commentary and success stories in media like The Imprint and Youth Today, which focus on the nation’s child welfare and youth justice systems. During our engagement, Pivotal heard from various local donors who said their giving was prompted by our media exposure. They also secured $250K from Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall initiative during our partnership.

Great things happen when you find the right people to support your mission. Liza and her team served as Pivotal’s PR/marketing consultant for over three years. She was a fantastic thought partner in our overall strategic marketing planning and successfully integrated PR into our communication efforts, which helped secure several major donors who have given year after year. Her ability to support and coach our staff in sharing their subject matter expertise in various Op-Eds and media publications put Pivotal in a position of strength, generating new, innovative, and effective ways to engage new audiences.

Note from a $5,000 donor

“I must say, I had never heard of you [Pivotal] until there was a story published in the S.J. Mercury News about two months ago. Until I read the story, I have never even thought about donating to support foster youth.  It’s is a very worthy cause and Pivotal seems to be doing great things in this area.”
